As I wander through the dynamic yet enduring experiences of The Great Darke County Fair, I find it’s the perfect time to reflect on what has been an exceptionally eventful year for both the residents of Darke County and Darke County Parks. This year has been a tapestry of experiences—some awe-inspiring and others deeply challenging. The themes of resilience, ingenuity, and collaboration stand out vividly, highlighting the dedication and hard work of our team and community.

The year began with our usual preparations: readying vehicles, tools, and equipment for the bustling seasons ahead. We ensured there was ample firewood for our Maple Syrup season and installed new sap collection systems to set the stage for a fruitful season and our much-anticipated “Waffle Breakfast” event. These preparations are crucial for maintaining the educational and family-friendly enjoyment our visitors have come to expect.

One of the standout highlights of the year was the introduction of two stunning sculptures, generously funded by the Darke County Center for the Arts (DCCA). These custom art pieces adorn the Bish Discovery Center and Historic Bear’s Mill. They have added a new dimension of beauty and cultural significance to our parks. If you haven’t had a chance to see these remarkable sculptures, I highly recommend visiting them. They are a testament to the value of integrating art and nature.

Another unforgettable moment this year was witnessing the breathtaking total solar eclipse. The event drew visitors from near and far, all eager to experience the celestial phenomenon. The eclipse served as a powerful reminder of the natural wonders that inspire awe and foster a sense of community.

Our commitment to preserving history was also reflected in the successful restoration of priceless French Millstones at Bear’s Mill. This project has ensured that these historic artifacts continue to play a role in the mill’s operations, enriching our educational programs and preserving a vital piece of local heritage.

The year also saw significant progress in our landscaping efforts. The grand opening of the Bish Natural Play Area, celebrated during our wildly successful Bash at Bish event, was a highlight. Nested between Bike trail, The Greenville Creek access and the Bish Discovery Center. This new play area has quickly become a favorite destination for families, offering children a unique and engaging outdoor experience that promotes creativity and physical activity.

However, 2024 was not without its trials. The state of Ohio experienced a record number of tornadoes this year—63 in total. This unprecedented storm activity made 2024 the most tornado-prone year in Ohio’s recorded history. Darke County was not exempt from the devastation. The tornadoes caused extensive destruction throughout the County, along waterways, through parks, preserves, schools, businesses, and homes, presenting significant challenges felt by our whole community.

The impact of these storms was profound, but the response from our team and the community has been nothing short of remarkable. We have worked tirelessly to clear debris and repair the damage, with the support of local volunteers, organizations, and residents. Their dedication and teamwork have been a beacon of hope and resilience during these challenging times.

Despite the difficulties, the spirit of collaboration and perseverance has shone through. Our community’s collective response has reinforced the strength and unity that define Darke County. The Gathering at the Garst and Encampment was a perfect example. Collaborating with the City of Greenville, local businesses, The Garst Museum, The Encampment committee, countless volunteers, and The Darke County Parks. We were able to host a wonderful event for our community, in the same area’s that recently received some of the worst devastation. Live Music, Historical reenactments, activities for all ages, and enough food and vendors to ensure everyone could have a wonderful time. Looking ahead, we remain committed to continuing our mission of enhancing and preserving the natural beauty of our parks and community. Our plans include expanding educational programs, further improving park facilities, and fostering a sense of community through events and initiatives.

As we navigate the remainder of 2024, I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has supported Darke County Parks throughout the years. Your unwavering commitment and enthusiasm have been instrumental in overcoming the challenges and celebrating the triumphs we’ve experienced.

Here’s to a future filled with continued growth, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Darke County. Together, we will continue to make Darke County a place of joy, learning, and natural beauty for all to enjoy.
