Solvita anniversary comes during blood shortage

DAYTON — Solvita introduced its new name on Labor Day weekend one year ago and will celebrate the anniversary under an emergency alert blood shortage with an immediate need for more donors.

On Sept. 1, 2023 the region’s first blood center and global tissue bank retired the original name Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Services and adopted the new name Solvita.

Solvita will thank donors for helping reach this milestone and encourage donations with the Solvita Anniversary Party Friday, Saturday, & Sunday, Aug 30-Sept. 1 at the Solvita Dayton Center, 349 S. Main St.

Solvita enters the challenging Labor Day holiday period with critically short supply of multiple blood types. Blood collection this summer has often fallen below the 350 donors per day needed to supply area hospitals while coinciding with sudden spikes in hospital emergency blood usage.

Hospital usage reported Aug. 24 included critical care of an ATV accident victim at Miami Valley Hospital that required 64 units of blood products including 44 units of type O positive blood.

Certain blood types have the highest demand and are currently in severely low supply. First time donors are needed to help Solvita identify new donors of these blood types and answer all blood type needs.

Solvita is calling on the community to respond to this emergency by donating as soon as possible. Schedule a donation on the Donor Time app, by calling (937) 461-3220, or at www.donortime.com. Walk-ins are welcome at the Solvita Dayton Center, 349 S. Main St.

Solvita will be closed Monday, Sept. 2 for Labor Day but the Solvita Dayton Center, 349 S. Main St. will be open for special hours 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1.

Now through Sunday, Sept. 1 everyone who registers to donate at the Solvita Dayton Center gets the choice of a $10 Kroger gift card or a $10 e-gift card.

The Labor Day weekend, Aug 30-Sept. 1 is the Solvita Anniversary Party at the Solvita Dayton Center.

All registered donors get the choice of $10 gift cards, plus the Solvita long sleeve, quarter-zip or crew neck shirt. Donors can also enjoy the free Ritter’s Frozen Custard Sundae Bar on Friday at the Solvita Dayton Center or cupcakes on Saturday and Sunday.

Sept. 1 is the last chance to enter the drawing to win tickets to the Nov. 3 Taylor Swift Indianapolis concert by registering to donate at any Solvita blood drive. Aug. 30 will be the first chance to enter the drawing to win two tickets to the Nov. 30 Ohio State vs. Michigan game in Columbus by registering to donate with Solvita. The drawing continues through Sept. 28.

You can save time while helping save lives by using “DonorXPress” to complete the donor questionnaire before arriving at a blood drive. Find DonorXPress on the Donor Time App or at www.solvita.org/donorxpress.
