Plein air demonstration and workshop

GREENVILLE — Area residents will soon have the chance to learn about plein air painting with a demonstration and hands-on workshop taught by professional artist Angie Siefring.

“Plein air” painting is the practice of painting outdoors from life to capture the essence of what the artist is seeing in real life. This method of painting was popularized by the Impressionists in the late 19th century due to the invention of portable paint tubes, which allowed artists to easily transport their materials outside the studio. Famous Impressionist artists known for painting in the Plein Air style include Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Cezanne, and Van Gogh.

The workshop will take place on Oct. 12 from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. on the lawn area in front of St. Clair Memorial Hall, located at 215 W. 4th St. in Greenville. The day will begin with a one-hour demonstration by the artist. Following the demonstration, students will complete their own paintings with personalized instruction from Siefring. The cost of the workshop is $55. Students will need to bring their own art supplies. Siefring will demonstrate her painting using oil paints, but students are welcome to use their preferred mediums, including watercolor, drawing/sketching, or pastels.

To register for the class, please contact Jennifer Overholser at 440-813-0367 or [email protected]. Students may also register online by visiting darkecountyarts.org/annabiergallery. The deadline for registration is Oct. 10.
