GREENVILLE — The Greenville boys and girls soccer teams held senior night on Oct. 1 as both teams took on Piqua. On the boys side, seniors Juan Gutierrez, Liam Jasenski, Layne Hocker, Gavin Hayes, Kevin Nguyen, Ryan Burrowes, Adam Edwards and Owen McGreevey were honored. On the girls side, Ava Dutton was honored.

The boys were the first ones up for the day going up against a 6-8 Piqua team. Piqua scored the first goal of the game at the 28 minute mark. Greenville responded as Burrowes scored on a corner kick that was deflected into the goal.

Just before the first half ended, Piqua got one more to go in to lead 2-1 at halftime.

The game was a constant fight between the two teams. Both were able to move up the field and put pressure on the defense.

Piqua scored two goals in the second half to lead 4-1 about halfway through the second half. The Green Wave kept up the energy and kept pushing the ball down the field. In the end, they couldn’t get one more to go in and lost 4-1.

Then after the senior ceremony, the girls took on the 4-8-2 Lady Indians.

Things started off well for the Lady Wave. Piqua only led 1-0 at halftime as a Piqua goal was called off for offsides. Head coach John Tabler said the team couldn’t get the ball up the field consistently even when the effort was there all night long.

“We almost lost focus as to what we were trying to accomplish defensively. We were letting some girls loose that we didn’t do in the first half. First half, I thought we played excellent,” Tabler said.

Even through the cold weather and some players going down with cramps, the Lady Wave continued to battle. Piqua came out in the second half and was able to get through the Greenville defense for five more goals in the second half.

Greenville still got some good play out of their goalies. Junior Rachel Wright started the game and made a few saves in the first half. To switch things up during the Piqua run of goals in the second half, sophomore Brooklyn Crampton entered the game as goalie as Wright moved out of the net to defense.

Tabler said Crampton made some nice saves and played well for a player who doesn’t have a lot of experience at the varsity level.

Piqua won the game 6-0 as Greenville had more chances in the second half to score, but couldn’t find the back of the net.

On senior night, Tabler said Dutton has been a leader since they started conditioning in June and always brings great effort on the field.

“She’s a good offensive player. She’s always moving. She’s the one that went down on the field and the officials stopped and had to drag her off the field. You know she’s working hard and it’s always a bonus when you have leadership like that in a program,” Tabler said.

The girls team will next play at Eaton on Oct. 7 starting at 6 p.m. The boys team will next play at Sidney on Oct. 8 starting at 7 p.m.
