DARKE COUNTY — In celebration of National Manufacturing Day, 500 sophomore students from all eight public high schools in Darke County took part in Sophomore Manufacturing Day, an annual event designed to introduce students to the wide variety of career opportunities available in modern manufacturing. This year marks the 11th year that Darke County Economic Development (DCED) has coordinated the event, offering students onsite tours at local manufacturers, following a brief virtual shift during 2020.

“Manufacturing is the backbone of our economy, transforming raw materials into the products that shape our lives, so it is important for these students to explore what opportunities are available in their communities,” said Olivia Schmitmeyer, Career Connections Coordinator for Darke County.

Participating manufacturers this year include Whirlpool Corporation-Greenville Facility, Superior Aluminum Products, Midmark Corporation, JAFE Decorating, Moriroku Technology North America (MTNA), Klockner Pentaplast, Fort Recovery Industries, and ARCH Cutting Tools.

These businesses opened their doors to show students the inner workings of modern manufacturing, highlighting the many career paths available, including positions in IT, Engineering, Training, Management, Finance, Communications, Product Design, Skilled Maintenance, Robotics, and Distribution & Logistics. “We look forward to Manufacturing Day every year to show local students the opportunities they have in their own backyard. This gives them a chance to see what we do and the opportunities available, not only in manufacturing but in all areas,” said Casey Frazee, Assistant Manager, Human Resources at MTNA.

The event not only showcased the advanced technology and innovative processes used by local manufacturers but also underscored the variety of roles that do not require a traditional four-year degree. Many manufacturers in the area offer programs that pay for college or technical training for their employees, allowing them to earn while they learn and avoid the debt often associated with higher education.

Sophomore Manufacturing Day is one of many initiatives led by Darke County Economic Development to provide local students with hands-on career exploration experiences, helping them discover opportunities within their own communities.
