GREENVILLE — Christy Prakel, executive director of the Darke County Foundation, was thrilled with the turnout for the 13th annual Sunshine 5K Run that supports local nonprofit organizations. A record 640 people registered for this year’s event.

Prakel said the success of the event is because of the people that want to support the nonprofit organizations that are important to them. “It’s an opportunity to enjoy a walk through the beautiful Greenville Park and do something good for themselves, and also something good for the community.”

The Sunshine 5K supported seven organizations during this year’s event. The nonprofit organizations include AddieGirl for Cancer Association of Darke County, DeColores Montessori School, Edison College Foundation, Final Bow Center for Children’s Performing Arts, Lifewise Academy Greenville, LifeWise Academy Versailles, and Y.O.L.O. of Darke County.

Prakel pointed out the Sunshine 5K has become a tradition. The event began a few years before the Darke County Foundation took over 13 years ago. The Green Family started the event to raise funds for a scholarship to honor the memory of their daughter. Prakel pointed out the Green Family has continued to participate every year.

When it looked like the race was going to end, the Darke County Foundation stepped in because it was a good fit for their mission. “That’s what the Darke County Foundation is known for – enriching the lives of Darke County residents. We celebrate wellness and community, and we want to support organizations that make our community a better place. It’s the perfect opportunity for us to promote healthy living and the good work those organizations are doing,” she said.
