ARCANUM — The Franklin Monroe co-ed soccer team fell to the Dixie boys soccer team, the top team in the WOAC, 12-1 at home on Sept. 23.
Assistant coach Bryce Robison said the team started off well before they let an easy goal by them. That forced them to play more defensive throughout the game. That along with some mental lapses led to the Greyhounds win.
“That puts you in the defensive mindset at point. Other than that, there was lapses of people just not focusing and allowing the opportunity. There is some good points to take away from this game. We just got to take those positives and keep advancing. It’s all you can do. Keep getting better and keep building,” Robison said.
Dixie was up 3-0 after the first ten minutes of the game. They scored the first two goals in the first five minutes. Freshman Evan Addis eventually got one goal to go in after he beat the goalie to the ball and took advantage of the open net.
After another flurry of Dixie goals, the Greyhounds were up 7-1 at halftime. Robison said for as much time as the defense played in their zone, they stepped up and didn’t allow the score to get too out of hand after facing a lot of shots.
“They were putting everything at us. I don’t know how many shots exactly they had, but they had quite a bit. It could have been a lot worse. The defense came up and the goalie made some good saves,” Robison said.
The Jets were playing a man down. Dixie got Franklin Monroe off their game with some extra physicality during the game. When a Jets player would try to stick up for themselves or their teammates, they were awarded a red card. Two players for the Jets left the game with a red card.
Dixie scored five more goals in the second half with four of them coming in the last 17 minutes of the game. Three of them came in a four minute stretch when the Jets were in the middle of a lapse.
Even with Dixie trying to get under their skin, the Jets stayed calm in the later parts of the second half and started to get more chances offensively. They came up short trying to get a second goal in.
Tournament draw for soccer is slowly approaching as it takes place on Oct. 6. Robison said he wants to see the team continue to improve on each game.
“We’re going to be going into the tournament soon. Hopefully, we can keep building and see what we can do the first game of the tournament,” Robison said.
